Meet Chris

Gold Coast based composer Christopher James, winner of “Best Music Composition” for the animation Shadow and Stray (2024), is praised for his “vision, contrast, originality, and clarity” (Classical Guitar Society of WA). His work spans a wide range of genres, composing from contemporary classical to electronica and frequently collaborating with a diverse range of ensembles. Aside from his creative endeavours Christopher is also currently undergoing his honours year at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University, mentored by Dr Vanessa Tomlinson, Dr Gerard Brophy, and Dr Gerado Dirié. His honours research explores Ecological Sound Art, driven by the belief that artists must use their creative voices to confront the climate crisis and its irreversible impacts. Christopher is also further refining his conducting prowess, conducting the Young Conservatorium Wind Ensemble under the mentorship of Stefanie Smith. When he’s not creating Christopher also deeply engages in music education, composing for, mentoring, and conducting numerous primary and secondary school ensembles. In his down time, Chris finds solace in the sport of rock climbing, a therapeutic outlet that rejuvenates his creative spirit.
